Grey House: Unique Mini Home with a Limited Budget in Jakarta
The Grey House, built in 2008, is a home designed by SUB studio architects that transformed a 70-square-meter space into a comfortable living space with smart furniture. The client had a budget of approximately US$15,000, equivalent to 200 million Indonesian Rupiah. With such a budget, the architect had to be resourceful in choosing materials and optimizing the use of space to keep costs down.
The house sits on a small 108-square-meter plot of land that stretches horizontally to the side. The architect divided the private and public areas under the same roof. The sloping roof in one direction creates a loft-like space with a higher ceiling on one side, allowing for better natural light.
The horizontally arranged rooms are separated by partition walls to provide different functions in each space. The modules used in this house are 3 meters in size, and the structure is efficient in utilizing these modules. One space-saving strategy employed is dividing the room zones based on circulation areas.
Dividing the room zones allows for spacious main gathering areas such as the living room and dining room without being disrupted by service areas within the house. The service area is placed outside the house and is built using non-permanent materials.
At the front of the house, there is a deck and a garden area. Lush climbing plants adorn the house's fence. The roof of the house extends with a mesh roof over the fence, allowing light in while providing shade to prevent excessive heat from entering this area.
The living room also serves as a family room and is connected to a separate workspace with partition walls that can be opened wide to expand the space when there are many guests. Its minimalist design gives the house a simple appearance.
There is also a mini garden inside the house enclosed by glass material. This area provides freshness and facilitates airflow both in and out of the house. Higher walls are utilized with window glass for air circulation and natural light. In the kitchen area, the table is stored under the kitchen shelf and can be pulled out when needed.
The master bedroom in this house includes an en-suite bathroom and a loft area for storage. The foldable stairs used also save space in the bedroom.
The bathroom is designed with simplicity, featuring a seated toilet, a sink, and a shower. The grey-colored wall surroundings convey a cool ambiance. Additionally, there is a skylight at the end of the bathroom wall.
Exposed materials adorn the house as a form of honest expression. Grey modular bricks measuring 200x200mm replace local bricks to provide a more precise and cost-effective finish for the interior walls. These materials also minimize construction costs.
The exterior fence of the house consists of walls decorated with vegetation, giving it the appearance of a vertical garden. Recycled wood materials are used to make the window frames, while a metal roof is chosen to reduce costs. The use of a single-sloped roof that directs rainwater in one direction helps save on structural expenses. This small house is truly simple, unique, and affordable for various demographics.
