8 House: Home Renovation that Exposes the Material Inside
This apartment house is a house for the architect himself, Tenhachi Architect in Kanagawa, which has been renovated from its original form. With an area in the building of 67 square meters, the architect exposed concrete materials and structural beams on the ceiling of this house. This is done to give to contrast with the white walls of the room. The entire space is only separated by two open boxes inside. The rest of the entire space in this house is interconnected without partitions.
The house that was originally wrapped in white throughout the space and had a separate bedroom was remodeled far away so that it was no longer the same as its initial shape. But the main structure of the room remains the same.
The location and angle of the photo that is still the same as the previous room photo looks very much different. If the room was previously functioned as a kitchen and dining room area, for the new room the area was used as a bed with a white open box.
At the bottom of the white box there is a bed with a warm and comfortable atmosphere. In addition, it also gives the impression of an intimate space because the height of the room is lowered by 50mm from the living room. The floor pattern is also changed from the living room.
At the top of the bedroom there is a playroom for children. Connected by stairs near the bedroom. This height can also be reached because the ceiling is left exposed to the building structure so that it can function properly.
In the old room, this area is a living room area with a dividing wall leading to the bedroom. Equipped with sliding doors that are very typical of this cherry blossom country.
While in the updated room, the room was transformed into a main room with a kitchen, dining room, work room and casual gathering room. The dividing walls of the room were torn down and made open. It is equipped with a 4.5-meter-long table made of cedar wood. This main desk has various functions combined into one. Family activities can be enjoyed in the area and can be used as a long table for 20 people. Not spared also the uniqueness of the hanging shelf to put the kitchen utensils.
The wood material on the floor is arranged with a certain pattern connected to the pattern on the wall. The second box as a room divider is made of wood in which there is a bathroom with a wide opening to the main room.
The border with the formation of this frame is only limited with white curtain cloth to provide privacy space. The white bathtub is adapted to the whole room. The walls of the bathroom area are made attractive with motifs resembling honeycombs with their hexagon tiles.
Furniture, tables, sinks and open shelves using wood material give an eccentric impression in the bathroom. The bathroom does not look monotonous white with the furniture. The shower area is also demarcated with sliding curtains attached to the pipes above it.
The exposed concrete structure and material are not only found in the main room but have been presented from the entrance to the house. At the entrance there is also a hanger to hang a bicycle on the wooden wall.
The only room that has a divider is the toilet room with wooden walls and doors. This toilet is placed in the front area of the house followed by an open and closed toilet which is right across from the bathroom area.
The picture above is the initial floor plan of the house. It consists of various boundary walls that make the whole room divided.
While in the new floor plan, the room is not too much limited by walls. The main room is made larger with various functions. The house feels more spacious and spacious. If in the previous house there were two rooms, in this one house there is only one main room.
The selection of materials in this house is also impressive. Natural materials in the form of wood combined with exposed materials are very eye-catching structures. The height of the room is maximized by eliminating the ceiling in this house.
