America Apartment: Simple Home Design for Newlyweds

This American-style apartment is not located in America but in Porto Alegre, Brazil. Designed by 0E1 Arquitetos, this 2016 project is a residential home for a couple. The apartment spans approximately 150 square meters and is characterized by a well-organized transition between spaces, allowing for seamless integration between social and private areas.

The design concept revolves around dividing the functions of social and private spaces across different floors. The use of structure and furniture within the apartment focuses on flexibility and lightweight elements.

The clients also requested automated space organization using technology, presenting a challenge for the architect to harmoniously integrate technology with the living spaces.

On the ground floor, which is designed for public use and does not interfere with the privacy of the occupants when guests visit, there are two main areas: the entertaining area and the service area. The service area is cleverly concealed from view through panels and wooden partitions, maintaining a seamless visual flow.

The entertaining area features an open-plan design, connecting the living room, kitchen, and a spacious dining area. These three spaces are spatially and materially integrated. The use of locally sourced Brazilian wood contributes to the overall cohesion of the spaces.

Transitions between rooms are marked by changes in ceiling height, which is particularly noticeable between the living room and the kitchen. The living room benefits from a double-height ceiling due to the void from the upper floor, creating a more spacious and open atmosphere.

The living room serves as a central connecting point within the apartment, designed for socializing and daily activities. A wooden staircase equipped with a metallic corridor leads to the private areas on the upper floor.

The second floor is dedicated to private spaces. Alongside the main bedroom with an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet, there is also a relaxation area. Upon ascending the stairs, the first area that becomes visible is the relaxation space, which serves as a social area and an extension of the homeowners' bedroom. This space is designed to feel outdoors due to the abundant natural light, creating a bright and warm ambiance.

The bedroom features a unique partition panel made of wood and metal, which is a dominant design element throughout the apartment. The king-sized bed is positioned near the window, allowing the occupants to wake up to natural sunlight. On the opposite side, there is a shelving unit with concealed clothing storage behind it.
