Studio for Two: Unique Studio-sized Apartment on the Top Floor
In 2016 Studio Wood was awarded for its unique and lightweight design with a non-permanent structure on a 365 square meter apartment site. Construction began by limiting the weight of the building and was also limited by a certain deadline. The materials used in the building are metal beams and columns to form the frame of the building and the building envelope walls with recycled steel panels from containers.
The building, located in New Delhi, India, began by placing truss beams on the floor to raise the floor level of the main room. This was done to give a floating room effect and avoid rainwater seepage into the structure. The outer walls get structural support from the floor and a flat roof of trafford sheets is laid on top. On the roof, wide skylight openings are provided so that natural lighting can enter the room.
The owners are young entrepreneurs, so the architects had to design with a space for working during the day but relaxing at night in mind.
The area is divided into three zones: an open outdoor space, a semi-patio space decorated with wooden decks and a closed cabin as the main space.
The outdoor and cabin sections are bordered by 3 UPVC glass door frames that make the outdoor and indoor spaces integrated. The cantilevered deck on the terrace provides the perfect space to sit and read a book or drink tea in the morning.
The interior of the cabin is designed with a modular concept. With a simple and long sofa that can accommodate 5 people on its seat. The two different sides of the cabin are shown with the cold impression of the white and ash walls while the warm impression is shown from the wood material on the floor and furniture shelves.
The sofa in the living room is a flexible sofa that can be converted into a bed. The cabin room is also equipped with a shower area and a work desk. Skylights in this room provide light to the sofa area and its surroundings.
The building landscape is filled with cubic block features installed at various heights. The patio space has a swing as a relaxing and play area. In the part of the residence that is covered by a yellow container layer is the shaft area and also the outdoor bathroom.
The wooden floor decks and wall partitions are neatly arranged horizontally. The lower part is made loose, allowing air to enter the area. It is very relaxing and also comfortable to sit and enjoy the view of the surroundings because the apartment is located on the top floor.
The most challenging part of the apartment design was designing the sliding door for the outside bathroom. The three-meter-high door had to be able to slide smoothly despite the heavy load. This was achieved by using a ball shaft in the door mechanism so that it can shift smoothly from opening to closing the door.
Another interesting feature of the landscape is the leveling of the outer wall of the courtyard. With a staircase-like shape made of mild steel and fibreboard plants installed at various heights. This technique makes the apartment greener and makes the wall more attractive.
The design of this building keeps in mind the orientation, climate and comfort of the owner. In addition to the built-up area of the cabin, landscaping also involves designing a microclimate using plants, water circulation planning, and sunshading.
This simple and unique apartment design is very suitable for owners who are still vibrant and free-spirited. Productive for work and very comfortable for rest.
