The business of building boarding houses has become increasingly prevalent in areas near universities and offices. Boarding houses provide an easier way for students and working individuals to have affordable temporary accommodations compared to renting or buying a house, especially in a city like Jakarta. These boarding houses also need to provide comfort for both the homeowners and tenants. One example is the Veranda House located in Cilandak.

The Veranda House is a combination of a residential and boarding house building that incorporates green architecture. Designed by Indonesian architect Sigit Kusumawijaya, the building stands on a 634-square-meter plot of land. Its green architecture is not just about having green plants around the house; it's also integrated into the spatial design and roofing system.

This building is located at the end of a road, with two entrances from the east and south. The homeowner's residence can be accessed directly through the eastern entrance, where there is also a private parking area. However, the owner can also access it through the boarding house, as both buildings are connected through a door in the kitchen.

In designing this building, the architect needed to consider not only the homeowner's needs but also support the boarding house activities for workers and students in South Jakarta. Another challenge was to accommodate urban farming, which is a concept for this house. Urban farming is one of the owner's hobbies and a way to make living in the midst of a bustling city more comfortable. Interestingly, the plants in the house can be consumed by both the homeowner and the boarding house residents.

To realize the concept of urban farming, the architect designed gardens within the building. These gardens are not limited to the land around the house but also include vertical gardens and rooftop gardens. Various plants can be seen on the exterior façade of the building, open areas within the house, and the corridor railings on the second floor of the boarding house. It creates a natural and beautiful atmosphere.

The central part of the boarding house has large openings and a transparent roof that allows light to illuminate all the rooms. This also helps ensure proper airflow throughout the house. Because of the vegetation throughout the house, the air is effectively filtered, providing clean air inside.

The ground floor of the homeowner's residence includes a kitchen, dining room, a caretaker's bedroom, and a toilet. The boarding house area consists of bedrooms for the boarding house tenants, a kitchen with a dining area, and a green open area in the middle of the building.

Moving to the second floor, there are two bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms and a living room or family room. These rooms are spacious and can be directly accessed from the external staircase. When the homeowner's guests visit, they can easily be directed to this room. The rooms have simple, well-lit interiors, with wall-mounted TVs and unique ceiling lights. Comfortable sofas and decorative wall shelves add a modern touch to the rooms.

As for the boarding house building, it accommodates 15 boarding rooms, each measuring 3.5 x 4 meters. The rooms are equipped with beds, en-suite bathrooms, study desks, wardrobes, and bookshelves. The room design features natural elements like wood and exposed concrete, creating a cool and modern ambiance. Adequate ventilation and lighting are also provided in each room.

This green garden isn't just an area with potted plants; it's thoughtfully designed for visual appeal. It includes a gazebo so residents can enjoy the garden under cover. The plants grown on the rooftop are not just decorative; they are edible, promoting a healthy lifestyle in the heart of Jakarta.
