Cloud House: A Livable Home with a Curved Cloud-Like Roof
Located in Fitzroy North, Australia, Cloud House is an addition and renovation of an Edwardian house. Designed by Mcbride Charles Ryan, this house has a playful and attractive design, distinct from the original house in the front.
The front part of the house facing the main street has been left mostly unchanged in its original Edwardian design from the early 20th century. This was done as a tribute to the architectural style prevalent in the area and to maintain visual harmony with the surrounding environment.
Charles Ryan's creation is divided into three distinct sections. This division creates a series of different experiences as one moves through the house. The first section is a predominantly white space with a traditional house style. The next section is a red cube-shaped room. Following that is a space with a curved roof and walls covered in wood throughout.
Private rooms such as bedrooms, bathrooms, and a workspace are located in the existing building. The only public area in this section is a hallway leading to the room behind it. The workspace also connects to a deck that serves as access to the room behind it.
Several renovations have been carried out in the house's interior to enhance its comfort. The predominantly white room is complemented by an exotic flower-patterned entryway carpet. Next, there is a room adorned with red boxes, which is the kitchen area, serving as the connecting point between the Edwardian-style house and the Cloud House.
The cloud-like formation is an unexpected element that adds a sense of joy and playfulness, much like a child's imagination. This space in the Cloud House serves as a gathering area where family members or friends can come together and dine in a warm and relaxed atmosphere.
The Cloud House has a south-facing façade and controls the northern light intake through cross-ventilation. The curved cloud-like shape creates a dramatic interior, where the walls, floors, and ceilings appear to blend seamlessly through their materials. With this pleasing geometric design, the exterior is complemented by silver metal cladding.
The Cloud House features glass walls and doors that expose the interior of the building. The dominant color is warm wood, accentuated by the reflected light on the wooden surfaces. When viewed from a distance, the red kitchen area becomes a striking focal point of the building.
In the rearmost section of the house, there is a swimming pool and backyard, providing space for various enjoyable activities. Children can safely play in this area. The property is enclosed by a wooden fence that separates it from the neighboring properties, ensuring privacy for this unique house.
