Design of a Beachside Villa that Makes Summer Vacation More Comfortable and Exciting
A vacation home is one of the temporary residences that several families own. These are usually designed in tourist areas such as mountains or beaches. This particular vacation home is located near the sea. The house, designed by Herbst Architects, is situated in Whangarei Heads, New Zealand. It is inhabited during the summer season and is not used as a permanent residence.
The concept of the house revolves around its function as a temporary summer residence. The architect explored various needs and designs suitable for this season. In the design process, the architect was challenged to create a harmonious connection between the house and its natural surroundings. The house is designed with varying building heights on the hillside facing the sea.
The building is divided into two main masses to adapt to the terrain's contours and create smaller-sized structures, each serving a different purpose.
The taller mass functions as the living area where people gather. This mass is divided into four spaces: the kitchen, lounge, and two shaded decks. The two decks are oriented towards the south and north, with the kitchen area connecting them.
The southern deck offers a view of the sea and features wooden windows that can be closed to block the wind. On the northern deck, the openings are on the western side, opposite to the southern deck's wooden windows.
The two decks also have distinct furnishings. The northern deck uses wooden picnic-style tables and chairs, while the other deck has long tables and leaning chairs. The southern deck also features a fireplace, providing warmth for gatherings on cool evenings. Additionally, a BBQ grill is available for hosting dinner parties at the house.
In the lounge area, there are glass windows facing south and a fireplace. Comfortable sofas and neatly arranged bookshelves create a cozy atmosphere in the room. The overall wooden brown color scheme provides warmth to the space.
The bedroom area, located below the living area, is accessible through a corridor from various directions. From the living area, there's a staircase down next to the lounge. The house can also be accessed from the west via a stepped staircase on the hillside. The corridor is open to the north and south, with doors ensuring circulation control into the house.
There are three bedrooms in this house. One master bedroom comes with an ensuite bathroom. There's also a double-bedded room and a fairly large room with four single beds. A complete bathroom with a shower is located between these two bedrooms. This vacation home can comfortably accommodate the owner and their family or friends for a holiday.
Interestingly, wood is the primary material used in the design of this house. On the exterior, the wood's natural color is exposed, creating an elegant and simple look. Various wooden structural elements of the house are left exposed, harmonizing with the overall interior of the home.
