Yin Yang House: An Environmentally Friendly House Blurring Indoor and Outdoor Aspects Through Various Open Spaces Within

The Yin Yang House is a single-family home located in Venice, California. It's built in a densely populated area. The house has convenient and easily accessible access to public spaces. It features a large door, glass openings, and various open outdoor areas like decks and terraces surrounding the house.

The focus of this house is on designing spaces for the family to grow, including their multiple children. Additionally, the house serves as a workplace for both parents. Therefore, the design aims to create a tranquil, relaxed, and well-organized atmosphere within its surroundings. The house also provides entertainment spaces and warmly welcomes both children and visiting clients.

The solid exterior of the house facing the street presents a different impression compared to the interior. Behind the entrance door made of recycled steel lies a courtyard displaying a natural indoor-outdoor area.

On the ground floor, the house is organized with a series of outdoor spaces and a courtyard integrated with the interior of the house. These spaces are arranged to form an open area that provides lighting and airflow to all rooms within the house.

From this courtyard, visitors can directly see the garden behind the house because this space is surrounded by glass material. It's also equipped with sliding glass walls leading to the living room, adding harmony between the main indoor space and other outdoor spaces. With this area, the house can accommodate many people without feeling cramped. Even the living room area can be extended to the outdoors.

The living room, kitchen, and dining room of this house are located in one open zone, interconnected, and create a cozy atmosphere. The large dining table can accommodate ten people. It's evident that this space offers a sense of relief due to its spaciousness. The furniture decorating the house appears simple and not excessive, providing lively colors against the white walls and gray floors of the room.

The open kitchen is designed so the cook can be accompanied by friends while cooking. In addition to this area, there's also a covered patio next to the kitchen outdoors. This patio can be used for enjoying breakfast and morning tea or simply conversing with family. With expansive glass walls and outdoor space, parents can supervise their children while they play or study.

The play with dimensions in this house is not just structural but also contributes to the uniqueness of the house. From the back, the house appears to be only one level. This is because the stairs to the upper floor are located at the back of the house.

On the second floor, there are bedrooms for the family. The rooms are designed to be small and simple. The size of the bedrooms is similar to typical bedrooms in regular houses. This is because the house prioritizes public gathering spaces on the ground floor, placing all private areas on the upper floor.

The tilted roof allows indirect sunlight into the bedrooms. The bedrooms also face a wooden deck, serving as a corridor and a green roof area. This green roof, undoubtedly, adds value to the house.

The materials used in this house are quite abundant and environmentally friendly. This includes bamboo materials for the interior, composite stones, tiles, and various other recycled materials. The house is designed with various systems to cool the house and be environmentally friendly.

Energy-saving systems are also implemented, including the use of 12 KW solar panels on the roof of the second floor. These solar panels also function as sunshades, ensuring the house doesn't get too hot. Other features in the house make it cooler and fresher, such as the garden, ventilation, open spaces, and more. Rainwater from the roof is redirected to the green roof area and collected for filtration. This allows the rainwater to be reused for cleaning, watering the garden, or flushing the toilet.
