A Home with Rotating Wooden Rooms! Its Unique Design Creates a Comfortable Atmosphere for All Seasons!
Who wouldn't be curious about this unique house? Designed in Tehran, Russia, this 1400-square-meter building has an elongated plot of land. Architect Alireza Taghaboni of Nextoffice created a fascinating dwelling that adapts to the weather and seasons of the region, making the house feel larger and featuring three levels of wooden boxes with terraces.
This 5-story house above ground and two basement levels has a unique spatial concept. There are fixed, mobile, and void building masses. Two fixed masses are solidly connected through the void of the building, allowing for the circulation of air and light in all directions from this void, considering the elongated plot of land. Meanwhile, the mobile building mass refers to the wooden box that can be extended or remain flat within its structural framework. When the box is extended, it provides an additional space as a terrace within the box.
One of the inspirations for this house is traditional Iranian houses, which can dynamically adapt to the environment and climate. This inspired the architect to design a unique dwelling suitable for the elongated plot of land.
During the summer season, the Sharifi-ha house offers an open appearance with protruding façades and a large terrace, allowing for good air circulation inside the house. However, during the winter season, the wooden boxes cover the open façade, giving the house a more closed appearance. The limited openings in the house prevent cold air from entering. The house seems to embody both introverted and extroverted qualities due to these seasonal changes.
This 7-story house serves various functions on each level. The basement is used for sports facilities, with a swimming pool on the lowest level and a fitness area on the level above it. The ground floor serves as a parking area and space for household assistants. In addition to stairs, the house also has an elevator for vertical circulation.
To enter the house, there is a grand staircase at the front of the building leading to the first floor of the residence. The first floor consists of public spaces where residents can welcome their guests. After ascending the stairs, the house has a terrace and a hall as the front area. On this floor, you will find the dining room, bar, living room, kitchen, and breakfast area.
The breakfast area with its kitchen is located in the wooden box on the first floor. When the wooden box is rotated, it provides more terrace space at the front entrance for receiving guests. This offers a more pleasant view towards the outside compared to when the glass wall of the box faces the house's wall.
Moving to the second floor, there is a family room for relaxation and watching TV, a kitchen, a void area, and a guest bedroom. The guest bedroom has a separate area with its own bathroom. The guest bedroom is within the rotating wooden box.
On the third floor, you'll find private spaces, including the main bedroom. The main bedroom is spacious with an ensuite bathroom and a sitting area. The relaxation area is also located here.
Other rooms on this floor include a kitchen, a dining room, and a workspace. Inside the wooden box, there is a workspace for the residents. Unlike the previous wooden box, this one rotates counterclockwise, offering a different orientation from the other two boxes. Meanwhile, the topmost floor is used as a bedroom for the residents or children.
One interesting aspect of the interior of this residence is the transparent glass railing along the corridor. It allows light to reflect from above and enter the dwelling. Additionally, the wall that acts as a safety barrier for the void area is covered with climbing plants, adding extra value to this space.
The swimming pool located in the basement area also features a beautiful and unique design. The pool has an open ceiling, allowing light to filter in from above. Although it's part of the basement, both the swimming area and fitness area are designed as attractively as possible to ensure the comfort of the residents in their daily lives.
