A Unique Curved-Shaped House! The Inspiration Behind This

This unique house is located in the northern part of Michel Island in the Azores. The main consideration in designing this house was the local climate with strong winds and heavy rainfall. Architect Bernardo Rodrigues designed the home with a main wall structure to shield it from the strong winds. To protect against heavy rain, various open areas are covered by roofs.

The first step was to create an L-shaped wall consisting of vertical walls and horizontal concrete slabs as the foundation of the building. Then, various curved building shapes were designed. The inspiration for these shapes was the flapping of bird wings during flight. The house features many open areas, allowing residents to enjoy the outdoors even when it's raining.

This house has four different facades on each side. When viewed from the direction of the wind, only the flat wall will be visible. On the other three sides, the unique curved structure resembling a flying bird can be seen, providing a captivating view from all angles.

The red flat wall is not entirely solid; it has two unusual openings. Windows provide natural light to the living room on the ground floor and the bedrooms on the upper floor. Meanwhile, windowless openings serve as windows for the rooftop area, allowing views from this side of the wall.

The roof of the house has two types: flat and curved, accessible via concrete stairs. The flat roof is covered with flooring, making it safe to walk on. This area is often used for family relaxation, whether for reading or enjoying the natural scenery. Soft cushions provide comfortable seating and support on the roof.

This two-story house has two zones: public and private. The ground floor includes public areas such as the living room, family room, dining room, and kitchen. On the second floor, there are various-sized bedrooms, from the master bedroom to the children's rooms.

There are several semi-open areas in this residence, allowing residents to enjoy these spaces even in bad weather. Due to the unconventional building structure, each room naturally possesses varying heights and diverse room shapes, including a variety of ceiling designs.

One example is the kitchen area. The kitchen in this house has a unique ceiling shape. Windows in the kitchen are not limited to the kitchen counter area but are also present in the room's ceiling. The rectangular window above provides both lighting and a unique accent in the room.

The open and spacious gathering area on the ground floor features glass walls on every side, offering views of the outdoor garden and pool. Natural light enters the house through the glass walls and various openings in the unique structure.

The daughter's bedroom is decorated with a playful and contemporary concept, with fun drawings and decorations adorning the room. A study desk in the room is placed near a window, creating a conducive learning atmosphere.

The curved window in the children's reading room is utilized as a unique spot for relaxed reading. The window frame is extended to serve as seating for the children, making it comfortable and enjoyable.

This house indeed boasts a variety of uniqueness, not only in its exterior but also in its interior. The facades resembling flying birds and the various curved shapes give the impression of a flexible and captivating home.
