Serpentine Gallery Pavilion, a Unique Building in the Midst of a Green Landscape!

The design process is undoubtedly shaped by various considerations related to its environment. As we know, analysis consists of how the applied design will fulfill its function, how the conditions of the surrounding site can enhance or diminish the site's quality, and, of course, the atmosphere created through the design.

The concept applied by the architect, Sou Fujimoto, is to create a structure that can harmonize architecture with nature.

He aims to create a form that can unite the organic shapes of nature with the precise lines/grid structure of artificial elements. Fujimoto succeeds in achieving this by balancing the potential of form, color, scent, and the beauty of both elements, even though the characteristics of these two elements are highly contrasting and easily distinguishable.

 Function

Fujimoto has a fairly clear vision in his architectural design. He wants to merge the interior and exterior spaces to enhance the applied function.

The grid formed by white pipes soars up to 15 meters. The grid formed by such a structure has terrace layers with transparent polycarbonate circles to protect from rain and reflect sunlight. The transparent white color is chosen to blend in with the environment.

 Site

The site surrounding the space greatly inspired Fujimoto to create a structure that complements both elements.

Contrasting forms will accentuate the beauty of both elements.

Atmosphere

The atmosphere created in this situation serves one purpose: to unite the potential within and outside the space.

Fujimoto specifically states, "the transparency is quite important for me because you can feel nature, the weather, and the different climate, even from inside the pavilion."

The pavilion's form will signify its harmony with nature because it allows you to sense the weather conditions, nature, and surroundings from inside the space.

 
Conclusion

In this design, Sou Fujimoto considers many aspects, including function, site, and atmosphere. After analysis, it can be seen that the vision created is the formation of a building with its unique function while still considering the site environment to enhance the quality of the building, accompanied by a unique form that complements both elements.
