Sunset House: A Home that Provides a Sunset Atmosphere in its Relaxation Area

The renovation of this 300-square-meter house in Sao Paulo has prompted casa14 Arquitetura to rethink its original 1970s design. With boxy sidewalks and unclear circulation, the project made architects reconsider social issues and the integration of spaces for a young couple.

To address these challenges, the architects had to overcome several obstacles, such as excessive dividing walls that constrained space, a rear yard that covered a 100-square-meter area, and unusual floor heights, all of which posed challenges in design.

To organize the interior space, the architects proposed removing partitions on the lower level and raising the floor height for the social areas. This would facilitate the integration of spaces within the house and expand the garden area, including an interior garden. The indoor balcony became a central space in the home, connecting the living room, kitchen, and rear yard. Stairs also became a primary vertical element in the house.

Glass frames were installed in the central area, complete with sliding doors. This design was implemented to enhance natural light and air circulation. Additionally, when the doors are opened, the outside garden provides fresh air into the house.

The renovation of this house also allowed for communication between rooms. The rooms are surrounded by curtains and plants, so excessive light can be controlled with the curtains. The west-facing rooms also provide a beautiful view for the homeowners to watch the sunset. Hence, the project was named the "sunset house."

If someone were to look at this house from the street, they might not expect the interior to be like this. This is due to the difference in floor heights in the house, making it a unique feature.

The lower level contains the living room, dining area, and kitchen, all connected without partition walls except in the kitchen area, allowing people inside to socialize freely. There is also a relaxation area outdoors with picnic tables and chairs.

For the workspace area, a concrete slab is used to support the glass ceiling on one side of the room. It is uniquely designed with glass partitions that serve as bicycle storage. This is because the workspace has two access doors: one through the front area of the house, adjacent to the main entrance, and another connecting to the interior of the house.

The front view of this house does not reveal its complex interior. The simple-looking front area is used for vehicle parking and as a house terrace. Right next to the main entrance door, there is a workspace with its own entrance. This results in the house having two entrance doors with separate entry areas.

In contrast to the front yard, the backyard is maximized as a relaxation area and green space. Potted plants, grass, and lush trees are spread throughout this area.
