Yeonhui-dong Gangnyeonjae: A Brick-Clad Home in South Kore

Since the 1960s, the Yeonhui-dong area has been a middle-class residential area in South Korea. When looking at the urban landscape around the land, the characteristics of homes in the area are quite evident.

One of the standout homes in this area is a house with an all-brick exterior. This 2016 project was built on a 293-square-meter plot of land and designed by Lee Haan architects.

The location of the land, situated at the end or commonly referred to as a "hook," provides two visible sides facing the main road, specifically to the south. Across the street, there is a specific plot of land that is said to have once been used as the residence for a royal concubine who would be crowned queen. On the southwest side, there is a small garden used as a communal area and an icon in this area.

In designing this house, the architect undoubtedly wanted the homeowners to feel spaciousness upon entering the house. This was achieved by placing the house at a different angle compared to the surrounding houses.

The parking area for vehicles in this house is located at a lower elevation, specifically on flatter ground. The house is designed in a T shape, open on its south-western side. The entrance is positioned between the two roads, making it easily accessible from both sides. The entrance area is equipped with a pilotis structure (a multi-level platform) with a garden.

In addition to the main entrance, the house can also be accessed through its garage area. However, only the homeowners can access this area. Since it is not the main entrance, it does not have the same open feel and attractive landscape.

Upon entering the house through its outer gate, visitors are greeted by a staircase leading to the inner courtyard of the house. There is also a staircase leading down to the house's garage area in this space. The main entrance to the house is located to the left after ascending the main staircase.

The entrance area of the house also includes a mudroom, a place to store shoes and jackets. It doesn't need to be excessively large, just the right size for practical use.

The master bedroom is located on this floor and includes an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. Additionally, the master bedroom offers views of the outdoor garden through its sliding windows on the wall.

The next room includes an open dining area that connects to the family room. The kitchen is also visible from this area. This space serves as the main gathering area in the house. Access to the outdoor deck is also available from this room.

There are two staircases leading to the upper floor. One staircase in the family room leads to a mini-library within the house. The library room features a void that opens to the family room below.

The main staircase is located near the ground floor bathroom. On the second floor, there are three single-bed bedrooms. This floor also includes a mini-kitchen. Each of these bedrooms has a balcony overlooking the outdoor area. Sliding glass windows in these rooms are ideal for natural ventilation and lighting.

The balconies on this floor are left empty, allowing them to be adorned with various plants due to their direct sunlight exposure. The roof garden on this level adds freshness and comfort to the outdoor area.
