Designing a House with Limited Space

Often, as architects, we get jobs or projects with minimum land area but maximum consumer or client needs :)

The first thing we ask is the space and budget needs, of course. If the budget is unlimited, it's not a problem, but if the budget is limited, architects have to work extra hard with more challenging ideas. In this case, architects play an active role in interviewing the client's space needs so that they can formulate priorities on a scale, which rooms must exist and which ones can be omitted.

There are several theories about the basic concept in designing, and it will change as humans adapt to their civilization. Great architects of their time, such as Richard Meier, who always focused on color, light, and space, designed architectural geometries, layers of space, and lighting effects that influenced the space itself.

Or theories like Frank Lloyd Wright, often referred to as an organic architect because of his focus on simplicity and tranquility, the correlation with nature, topography, natural colors, and the nature of materials. The challenges for architects today are different. In my opinion, architects today are growing up in a time with limited land, making the need for space efficiency very important. The atmosphere and climate are very different from our predecessors' time. This can be called the modern architect's challenge today.

Limited land becomes an interesting issue when architects try to innovate sustainable buildings. Of course, in a micro view, there is a great responsibility in the macro context, where urban architecture plays a role in regulating and creating goodness. This article tries to discuss the concept on a micro-level, namely homes. A home is one element among various types of buildings on the earth's surface, inside which there is a group called a family. This family has different characteristics and habits from other families, or in other words: different houses, different characters.

"Architects are part of shaping a character when architects succeed in designing each layout to be comfortable, often the positive effect on the family will follow. On the other hand, when a house is not designed carefully and measured, social and family problems may arise."

Why do I say that? Architects learn about human circulation patterns, learn about the psychology of space (so that the space becomes comfortable), architects learn about good air circulation (so that the occupants are healthy), architects learn about feelings, and many more. Because architects can be said to be directors in planning a residence. So that the visual feeling is created properly, we can all imagine that if the house is messy, there will often be feelings of anxiety, worry, and anger.

In designing, architects must really know the existing conditions of the location to be built because architects will respond to environmental conditions, wind directions, sun directions correctly, as well as other elements that can strengthen the building both visually and non-visually. A properly designed house will result in a good quality of life for the occupants.
