Gallery House: A Residential House with an Art Gallery Inside

The house in London, located in Stoke Newington, is incredibly beautiful and unique. Designed by Neil Dusheiko Architects for the architect's father-in-law, it is situated at the end of the architect's own home, ensuring that the architect's wife can be close to her father and easily accessible.

They eventually found a dark and damp house adjacent to their own, which they transformed into a comfortable home for the architect's father-in-law with a beautiful design, ample light, and good air circulation. One of the concepts for the house was to create a space to showcase the owner's art and ceramic collections.

The front of the house resembles the neighboring buildings and is equipped with a brick wall. The entrance is located at the end of the wall, adjacent to the neighbor's front door. On the other side of the wall, there are protruding house windows.

Upon entering the house, visitors are greeted by a hallway facing a staircase leading to the upper rooms. Right next to it is a medium-sized living room.

The walls of the living room are adorned with open shelves to display the homeowner's art. Designed simply, the living room features bright-toned materials. There is a wooden cabinet in the room, adding color to the space, and the walls are adorned with eye-catching paintings.

Separated only by a floor level change, the next room contains the kitchen and dining area. Just as interesting as the living room, this space allows you to enjoy art while having a meal, thanks to wooden oak shelves on the walls.

The room is well-lit with a glass roof and glass doors and windows leading to the backyard. The use of glass frames on the windows and walls allows the interior of the house to be visible from both inside and outside the backyard.

Exposed brick material is used to add warmth to the room. The texture of the bricks creates a natural and non-monotonous atmosphere. Exposed brick material is found in the dining room and kitchen, extending to the back terrace, creating a seamless connection between the outdoor terrace and the interior of the house.

The design of the kitchen was carefully considered by the architect since the homeowner is a skilled cook. Its neutral colors do not clash with the wooden materials or exposed brick floor. There is also a long bench near the kitchen's glass window, providing a perfect place for visitors to relax and chat with the cook.

On the floor above, there are two bedrooms with separate bathrooms in another room. The layout of this floor remains the same as it was before the renovation. The bathroom with a bathtub is located at the back of the house, next to the walk-in closet.

The bathroom not only serves the homeowner but also functions as a guest toilet due to its proximity to the vertical circulation, the staircase. A skylight is added to the roof above the toilet and bathtub area.

The top floor is an additional bright attic space with skylights. Originally, this floor was just a flat roof. However, the architect turned it into an attic bedroom with an en-suite bathroom.

This top-floor room has a color scheme that greatly differs from the rest of the house. While the ground floor offers numerous artworks and muted furniture colors, this room is bold and daring with red walls. Large windows allow the owner to gaze at the distant spire of the local church. It's a comfortable and private space.

The architect aimed for a bright and comfortable yet modern and private house. Designing a home with the artwork of his father-in-law makes the house more interesting and comfortable. Every visit to this house will always bring something different, such as new paintings or ceramics created by the owner's father.

The choice of materials for the building also contributes to the overall atmosphere of the house. Although the brick exterior gives the house a traditional feel, there is a modern aspect seen in the dining room and the exterior of the top floor.

Black zinc material is used as the structure, and large zinc sheets are used to create a monolithic appearance on the roof. From the front, the house does not appear to have three stories due to the sloping roof of the attic.

It is essential to create a balanced design that maximizes open spaces while also considering the homeowner's privacy. This results in a modern yet comfortable design with a warm ambiance.
