Floating Studio: An Architectural Design Studio with a Striking Floating Appearance that Embraces Environmental Harmony

Established in 2011, this architectural design studio is located in a suburban area, 12 miles west of Jakarta in Tangerang, Indonesia. With a land area of 500 square meters, the building was designed by Studio Air Putih. Featuring a unique design that prioritizes the natural environment, the building is nestled among mature trees in the area.

The structure, made primarily of glass, gives the impression of a floating and stage-like building. It is designed on a 4 x 8-meter grid and supported by flat steel columns at key points. To access the interior of the building, there is a large reflecting pool that enhances the surrounding area. A wooden terrace serves as the connecting path between the outside and inside of the building.

The ground floor of this building is used for public activities such as receiving guests, meetings, administrative transactions, and negotiations with clients or suppliers. The living room features a void that provides a spacious and open feel due to its high ceiling. With transparent surroundings, guests can observe the environment and feel at home.

The ground floor, characterized by clear lines and minimal ornamentation, creates a modern, practical, and functional public space. Granite is used in the interior to add a sense of coolness to the room. The presence of the pool also contributes to the comfortable temperature within the building.

To access the workspace on the upper floor, a steel staircase serves as the vertical circulation access. The second floor showcases a clean and spacious room design, dominated by white, creating a sense of spaciousness. The furniture and cream-colored wooden flooring seamlessly blend with the overall design. Bookshelves are placed next to the void opening, providing a pathway to retrieve or store books.

Examining the exterior of the house, there are two separate building masses connected by an open corridor on the ground floor. The smaller mass is used for service areas such as the kitchen and lavatory on the ground floor, with a maid's room above.

Returning to the unique design of the office, while the ground floor uses glass as the primary material, the upper part of the building is constructed with concrete panels and features a cantilevered roof. The cantilevered roof extends the building's form, making it appear integrated with the extended roof size. The roof is also supported by exterior columns that extend into the pool. The pool's reflective surface creates a sense of spaciousness in the room.

The use of glass in this building is intended to maximize views of the surrounding area. The 500-square-meter landscape surrounding the building is lush and green. The studio masses are designed to fit within its courtyard. Both building masses are carefully integrated among the trees, and the green landscape is showcased by the architect from the studio space.
